An abbreviation for Before Diminished Calissae. One of the two time periods tracked by the common Aedelorian calendar. This dating method counts the number of years prior to the Withering.
, stemming from the region of Ras Yara in Valdar. Approximately 2 million people in Aedelor are Yaran, primarily living in Ras Yara and neighbouring Aurileme, in the Valdarian Empire. Yarans are almost all human (~85%), with elfkin (~5%) and elven (~5%) minorities.

The Yaran people began differentiating themselves from Zamerians primarily over matters of the divinity of Lunasila, a patron goddess to the Zamerian people. Partially due to environmental factors of living farther north on the Valdarian subcontinent, and largely due to the influence of dragons in the area, Yarans began to carve out their own cultural identity. While many parts of their linguistics and traditions share similarities with Zamerians to the present day, Yaran culture has become a distinct melting pot of influences from many of their modern neighbours, especially under the Valdarian Empire.

Symbology

Banner: A spiraled tower with trees flanking it, over a bronze and green chevron field

Colours: Green, black

Motto: “In unity, happiness”

Values: Cleverness, Vigilance, and Perseverance.

History: The original motto of Ras Yara, before the Empire, was “The Cunning Lord Towers Over”, a clear statement towards their green dragon ally. Their banner was a green dragon in flight over a tower and a forest. With the Valdarian Treaty, they were allowed to maintain their colours, but their banner, motto, and capital city name were forced to change. They were no longer allowed to fly the banner with the green dragon's visage, nor speak of it. Those that still have the old banners hide them, as they were all ordered to be burned. Owning or making one is against Valdarian Law. They occassionally appear in the black market. In its place, the new banner now only depicts the tower and forest, with a bronze and green chevron field behind. Their motto is now “In unity, happiness.”
